Our client for this project was concerned that the angled alcove she had in her bedroom was not deep enough to fit a wardrobe. She also wanted a chest of drawers, but was not sure where she would put it as the only space she had was under a window. Her main concern was that her room was too small for fitted furniture and she didn’t want the room to look cramped.
A fitted furniture solution for an angled room
James started by explaining that although the alcove was too shallow for a wardrobe, he could design it with an extended end panel that would increase the depth to the required measurement to allow her to hang her clothes on a hanger without being crushed when the door was closed. This was designed and fitted following the contours of the sloping ceiling and wall, which made the fitted wardrobe blend into the alcove.
Adding a mirror insert door to the smallest angled wardrobe door, created the optical illusion of opening up the room and also gave the client a practical mirror for dressing.
By designing the drawer unit at a slightly shallower depth, this allowed them to be fitted into the small alcove under the window. The shallower depth still gave plenty of room for clothes to be stored but also meant that the client had room to move around the bed. It also provided an additional top for displaying ornaments and photographs. As with the built in wardrobe, because it was scribes carefully around the contours of the wall, it fitted perfectly into the alcove.
To make a feature of the bespoke bedroom furniture as it was being fitted into angled alcoves, James designed the carcase and fronts in complimentary wood colours to enhance the feature angles. This also creates the illusion of space. This was carried through to the matching free-standing bedside units and to the headboard.
The client was so pleased with the end result and could not believe how much storage had been designed into the angled room, despite her thinking it was too small for fitted bedroom furniture. She loved the furniture colour scheme which added another dimension to the room and her light and airy décor and soft furnishings complimented the furniture perfectly.
