5 walk-in wardrobe layouts that work in real Dorset homes

We've fitted hundreds of walk-ins. These are the five layouts our customers come back to again and again.
A walk-in wardrobe sounds like a luxury reserved for huge new-builds. In practice, almost any spare bedroom — and quite a few loft conversions — can become one with a bit of clever planning.
Layout 1: The U-shape. Hanging on three walls, an island or seat in the centre. Needs about 2.4m by 2.6m to feel spacious. Brilliant for couples who want a clear his/hers split.
Layout 2: The galley. Hanging on two facing walls, a runway down the middle. Works in spaces as narrow as 1.8m and is the most efficient use of square footage we know.
Layout 3: The L-shape. Hanging on two adjacent walls with a dressing area in the third corner. Suits awkward rooms with a chimney breast or a sloping ceiling on one side.
Layout 4: The dressing room. Hanging on one wall only, with a vanity and shoe wall opposite. Great for solo use and feels less storage-y.
Layout 5: The loft conversion walk-in. Full-height hinged doors at the high end, drawer banks under the slope, an island runs down the centre line. The trick here is not boxing in the eaves — let the slope show.
All five are properly costed and visualised at our free home design visit. Send us a floorplan and we'll usually have a starting layout sketched within the week.
